Top baby names for 2015 released

The Social Security Administration (which tracks baby names at birth in the US) just released the list of top baby names for 2015. The names are…

Rank Male name Female name
1 Noah Emma
2 Liam Olivia
3 Mason Sophia
4 Jacob Ava
5 William Isabella
6 Ethan Mia
7 James Abigail
8 Alexander Emily
9 Michael Charlotte
10 Benjamin Harper

Emma and Noah top the charts again in 2015. But if you factor in Sofia (9,650 baby girls named this in 2015) with the Sophias (17,327 baby girls named this in 2015), considering they are the same actual name, just with spelling variations, then Sophia/Sofia is the #1 baby girl name right now. (There were 20,355 Emmas born in 2015, vs 26,977 Sophia/Sofias.)

Ava moved up one spot, knocking Isabella down a slot. Emma, Olivia and Sophia are the same top 3 names from the year prior. For boys,  the top 5 are exactly the same.

Harper moves into the top 10 for the first time. Last year it was #11, #16 the year before, but about a decade before it was all the way down at #887. Check out this chart to see it’s move up through the years:

This is the first time Evelyn has been in the top 15 girls names. In 2000, it was down at #150.  It hasn’t been this high since 1927. It was #10 in 1915. That’s the highest it’s ever ranked. Interestingly, in 1900 it was down at #70.

Victoria broke into the top 50 in 1987 and has hung in the top 20-30 girl names since the 1990s.
